Sense of meaning
The feeling that what you do is connected to something that matters to you — which makes hardship easier to carry.
How it shows up
- You can explain why you do what you do — at least to yourself.
- The dull parts of the work are easier to bear because you know what they're for.
- Decisions come more easily: there's something to check them against.
- Even on hard days there's a sense that it isn't for nothing.
What feeds it
Meaning comes from linking actions to values, from a sense of being needed or making a difference, and from the story you tell yourself about your life. It isn't found once and for all — it's noticed and built up in everyday things.
What erodes it
Living by other people's goals, work whose results you never see, and a long stretch of “just getting through”. Meaning also fades under heavy exhaustion — and then it seems it was never there.
How to summon it on purposeTake one thing you did this week and ask yourself “what's it for?” three times in a row. The third answer is usually closest to what matters to you. Write it down and see which of your current tasks serves it best.
