Need for control
It's hard to hand things to others or leave anything to chance: you only feel calm when everything is under your eye.
How it shows up
- It's easier to do it yourself than to explain and then check.
- Unexpected changes of plan throw you off more than they should.
- You keep countless details in your head “so nothing slips”.
- A holiday or a day off doesn't feel restful: your thoughts drift back to work.
Where it usually comes from
Control is a natural answer to uncertainty: it gives the sense that bad things can be prevented. For many people the strategy formed where others couldn't be relied on and responsibility came early. It works while there's strength to spare, and starts failing once there's more to do than one person can hold.
What it costs
The load grows and delegating gets harder; the people around you get less room, and you get less rest. Constant readiness for the worst keeps the body braced.
