Loss of motivation

What used to excite you no longer moves you: you know you should, but you can't feel why.

How it shows up

  • The goals are still on paper, but nothing inside responds to them.
  • You go through your days on autopilot and can't remember the last time you really wanted something.
  • Motivational videos and books help for about an hour.
  • The question “what's all this for” comes up — and has no answer.

Where it usually comes from

Motivation isn't a supply that ran out; it's a signal that an action is connected to something that matters to you. It fades when the goals were someone else's, when effort brought no result for a long time, or when life changed and the goals didn't. Sometimes behind it sits a tiredness nobody acknowledged.

What it costs

Days blur into each other, decisions are made by inertia, and the feeling of living your own life dims. It's easy to blame yourself for weakness, though the problem is often the direction, not the willpower.

Try this weekRecall three moments from the past year when you were genuinely interested or lost track of time. Write down what they had in common: people, the kind of task, the setting. It isn't an answer to “why” yet, but it's the first hint of where to look. If indifference to everything has lasted for weeks, it's worth talking to a specialist.
