Loneliness
The sense that nobody near you truly sees and understands you — even when there are plenty of people around.
How it shows up
- You're with others but feel separate from everyone.
- There's no one to share good news or a difficulty with for real.
- Evenings and weekends feel especially empty.
- You want closeness, but taking the first step is hard.
Where it usually comes from
Loneliness isn't about how many people are around; it's the gap between the closeness you need and the closeness you have. It grows after moves, break-ups and job changes, and wherever opening up once wasn't safe. Over time it can sustain itself: the longer you go without closeness, the scarier it is to approach.
What it costs
Joys and difficulties are lived alone, tension grows, and the world starts to feel less friendly. Loneliness is hard in itself — it isn't a flaw of character.
