Inner support
A sense of your own worth that doesn't depend entirely on other people's judgment, success or approval.
How it shows up
- Criticism can sting, but it doesn't collapse how you feel about yourself.
- You can say “no” and stay in touch with the person.
- In a hard moment you turn to yourself with support rather than reproach.
- Your values are clear to you without anyone else confirming them.
What feeds it
Inner support is built from experiences of being accepted — valued for more than your achievements — and from decisions of your own that you're willing to stand behind. It can be built further in adult life: through caring treatment of yourself, clear values, and relationships where you can be who you are.
What erodes it
A life spent constantly meeting expectations, surroundings where love has to be earned, and the habit of talking to yourself in the critic's voice.
How to summon it on purposeWrite down three values that matter to you, and for each one, one action this week that fits it — even if nobody notices. In the evening, note what you did and give yourself one kind word for it.
