The inner critic
A harsh inner voice that notices every mistake and is rarely satisfied — even when things objectively went well.
How it shows up
- After any conversation, your head replays everything you said wrong.
- You talk to yourself more harshly than you'd ever talk to a friend.
- A small failure quickly becomes a conclusion about you as a whole.
- Rest feels undeserved until “everything” is done.
Where it usually comes from
The inner critic often speaks in voices from the past — parents, teachers, early bosses — and once had an understandable job: to push you to try harder so you'd escape other people's criticism. It's still trying to protect you, but with methods that hurt more than they help.
What it costs
Constant self-criticism wears you down and makes trying new things harder; the joy of finishing is snuffed out before it can arrive.
Try this weekNext time the critic speaks, write its sentence down word for word. Next to it, write what someone who respects you and wishes you well would say about the same situation. You don't have to believe the second sentence — it's enough to see that another tone is possible.
