Flow

Complete absorption in the work, when time disappears and effort feels like movement rather than struggle.

How it shows up

  • You look up and realise two hours have passed.
  • Your attention doesn't drift to your phone or stray thoughts.
  • The task is hard but not frightening — right at the edge of your ability.
  • Afterwards you're pleasantly tired, not drained.

What feeds it

Flow appears when three conditions meet: a clear goal, clear feedback, and a task slightly harder than usual. It loves long uninterrupted stretches of time and one thing at a time.

What erodes it

Constant switching, notifications, vague goals, and tasks that are either too easy (boring) or too hard (anxious).

How to summon it on purposeSet aside fifty minutes without notifications for one task with a clear goal for that stretch: “write the first section”, not “work on the project”. Choose the difficulty so it's a little challenging. Afterwards, notice how fast the time went.
