Fear of making mistakes
A mistake feels so dangerous that doing nothing seems safer than risking doing it wrong.
How it shows up
- Before acting you check and double-check for a long time.
- “What if it doesn't work?” is louder than “what if it does?”
- You choose the familiar and safe, even when it doesn't satisfy you.
- Past mistakes come back in vivid detail, and often.
Where it usually comes from
A mind that fears mistakes usually learned at some point that mistakes are expensive: they were mocked, punished, or genuinely had serious consequences. Caution became a survival strategy. Today it often overestimates the risk and underestimates the cost of standing still.
What it costs
Inaction is a decision too, and its price grows quietly: missed chances, stagnation, a sense that life is passing by. And the experience that would make mistakes less frightening never accumulates.
