Fear of judgment
What others might think shapes your decisions more than what you actually want.
How it shows up
- Before posting or proposing anything, you spend a long time imagining the reaction.
- You stay quiet in a meeting despite having an idea — so as not to look foolish.
- One critical comment outweighs a dozen kind ones.
- Choices of clothes, words and plans often pass through “how does this look”.
Where it usually comes from
For humans, belonging to a group has always been a matter of survival, so sensitivity to judgment is a natural part of the mind. It grows stronger if mistakes were once shamed in public, or if love depended on how “convenient” you were. Then other people's opinion becomes the measure of your own worth.
What it costs
Your visibility and voice shrink: ideas go unspoken, projects go unreleased, and life slowly bends to fit an imagined audience.
Try this weekThis week, take one small visible action you've been putting off for fear of judgment: a question in a meeting, a post, a proposal. Write down beforehand the reaction you expect — and afterwards, the one you actually got.
