Endless preparation

When getting ready quietly replaces doing: one more course, one more revision of the plan — and the start slips again.

How it shows up

  • You're on your third course in a field where you could already take a first step.
  • The plan has been rewritten several times; the first email to a client still hasn't gone out.
  • “Just a bit more polishing and I'll start” has been true for weeks.
  • Preparing feels good; the thought of launching makes you tense up.

Where it usually comes from

Preparation gives a feeling of motion without risk: while you prepare, nobody can judge the result, because there isn't one yet. Often a rule sits underneath — “you may start only once everything is foreseen”. It may once have protected you from criticism; now it protects you from life as well.

What it costs

Time goes into polishing things that have never met reality. The real feedback — the only thing that could tell you what actually needs work — never arrives.

Try this weekPick one action you could show another person within 30 minutes: a draft, a call, a single page. Do it imperfectly, then write down what actually happened — not what you were afraid of.
