Calm
A state in which the mind doesn't run ahead of events: you're here, breathing evenly, able to choose rather than only react.
How it shows up
- You hear what the other person is saying instead of preparing your reply.
- Surprises stir curiosity or annoyance, but not panic.
- Decisions are made without rushing, even when time is short.
- Your body is relaxed: shoulders down, breathing slow.
What feeds it
Calm grows from a sense that most situations can be handled, and from simple bodily things: sleep, movement, pauses between tasks. It doesn't mean the absence of problems — it's the ability to stay yourself while they get solved.
What erodes it
Constant hurry, information noise, too little sleep and the habit of holding everything in your head at once. Calm rarely disappears in a single moment — more often it gets crowded out bit by bit.
How to summon it on purposeTake a two-minute pause: a slow breath in for four counts, out for six, then silently name five things you can see around you. Repeat it before your next important conversation and notice the difference.
