Burnout
Long strain without recovery, after which work and familiar things stop giving you energy or meaning.
How it shows up
- In the morning it's hard to start even things that used to come easily.
- People and tasks that were once neutral or pleasant now irritate you.
- Rest doesn't restore you: after a weekend you're just as tired.
- Cynicism creeps in — “what's the point”, “nothing will change anyway”.
Where it usually comes from
Burnout usually builds from three things: demands exceed resources for a long time, effort brings no visible result or recognition, and there's almost no way to influence the conditions. People who take a lot on and struggle to stop fall into it more often — because they keep going when it's already time to recover.
What it costs
Not only productivity drops, but also joy, curiosity and patience with the people close to you. If nothing changes, the state deepens, and getting out of it takes months.
