Anxiety about the future
The future feels like a place where trouble lies in wait, and the mind lives through scenarios that haven't happened yet.
How it shows up
- You often think about what could go wrong — with work, money, the people you love.
- Good news doesn't settle you for long: a new reason to worry turns up right away.
- Planning turns into running through the worst cases.
- Your body is tense even when nothing bad is happening right now.
Where it usually comes from
Anxiety is an attempt to prepare for a danger that isn't here yet. It's strongest where a lot really is uncertain, or where bad things once happened without warning. The mind reasons: “if I think about the worst in advance, I won't be caught off guard” — but the price of that readiness is paid every single day.
What it costs
The present gets spent rehearsing the future; decisions are delayed or made out of fear rather than wanting. Over time the anxiety starts to feel like the background of life.
